Joe Goode was an American painter and sculptor recognized for his innovative contributions to Pop Art and Conceptual Art from the 1960s onward. After moving to Los Angeles in 1959, he became associated with the “Cool School” generation of West Coast artists. He attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1959 to 1961.
Goode’s early works, including his Milk Bottle and Cloud paintings, challenged traditional notions of representation and perception, often blurring the line between the everyday and the sublime. Over six decades, his practice encompassed painting, sculpture, and installations that explore themes of nature, impermanence, and spirituality. In 2015, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis exhibited a survey of Joe Goode’s work.
Goode’s work is included in numerous museum collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Menil Collection, The Smithsonian Institution, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
